'The Glee Project' Interview: Michael and Lily Reflect On Their Experience

Mary Oates
The Glee Project

After being in the bottom three multiple times throughout the competition, Michael and Lily both got sent home in a double elimination just a week shy of the finale. I talked to them both about making it so close to the end, and they predicted which of the final three will win the spot on Glee.

Ology: Hi Michael and Lily. How does it feel getting eliminated just before the finale?

Lily: Well it was definitely a lot of built up emotion from the last ten weeks. And, you know, I think Michael and I can both say at that point we did everything we possibly could have.

Michael: Absolutely.

Lily: And our fate was really just laying in the mentors’ and the writers’ hands at that point. And, you know, it’s kind of nice to have someone to be eliminated with. It’s made our elimination journey as a whole a lot easier because we have another person to express it to who’s in the exact same boat.

Michael: Oh, absolutely. I mean we both got eliminated and it was so nice to be able to walk out of the choir room with someone, you know, and not just be all solo and sad.

Lily: I completely agree.

Michael: It was, you know, it was rough being eliminated right before the finale. But on the other hand, you know, we got eliminated right before the finale. So I like to think about it as a positive.

Looking back now, do you both wish or feel there was anything else you could have done?

Michael: Well, I’m always hard on myself and I’ll never be satisfied with a performance. I’ll always want to, you know, best myself. I’m my biggest competition, you know? But that said I feel like I gave everything I could have to The Glee Project. And just to reap the benefits I learned so much about myself and performing. So you know what? I’m pretty happy with the way that I did it.

Lily: For me at the end of the day, I know everything happens for a reason. And I know I leave with absolutely no regrets. Everything I did or said I definitely learned from and I think that’s the most important for me in my journey.

What was the most important thing that you guys think you took away from the whole experience?

Lily: I think I personally took away a more sense of myself I guess. Being able to really reach out and listen and it really opened my eyes. I come from a small town and a very non-diverse place. And living with so many different types of people and being in such a high stakes situation it’s really tested my will and my way and I have to thank everybody involved for that.

Michael: Yeah. I think I walked away with a newfound confidence in my performance abilities. I didn’t think that I had it in me to make it this far. And I know now that I can and I did and I’ll carry that with me.

Out of the final three, who do you think has the best chance of winning?

Lily: There are so many facets that went into that.

Michael: That’s an interesting way to raise the question.

Well, I feel like they could probably all be on Glee but if they only pick one winner, who do you think it will be?

Michael: Yeah, the ways of Ryan Murphy are wild and mysterious. I don’t know who has the best chance. I was definitely closest with Blake so I would - I’d like to think that he has the best chance of winning.

Lily: I honestly think that Aylin has one of the most original stories that’s never really been done before. And I have a feeling that Ryan’s really interested in that.
