The Houston Astros had a surprisingly respectable start to the 2012 season. Despite having only a few big-league-caliber players on the roster, the 'Stros got off to a 21-23 start. Since then? Hasn't gone so good. The Rastros have now fallen to 36-74, which puts them on pace for 109 losses. But it gets worse! Houston has lost 31 of its past 35 games, and if the Astros maintain that .114 winning percentage over the final 52 games, they'll end up at 42-120. Yikes.
Anywho, a truly bad team doesn't cement its place in history until it makes a wonderously bad blooper that can serve as the symbolic lowlight of futility. Thankfully, the Houston Astros provided such a blooper last night. It involved an opposing runner scoring from first on a sacrifice bunt play with the game tied in extra innings. It involved Astros pitcher Wilton Lopez colliding with Astros first baseman Steve Pearce while trying to field the bunt. It involved Astros third baseman Matt Downs making one of the most bizarre moves I've ever seen on a baseball field, looking almost like a heroic Secret Service Agent trying to take a bullet for the President.
There was a wild throw. There was another wild throw. It was fabulous. The play cost the Astros the game. Here's the video:
