I’m speculating that there’s a provision in Drake’s Young Money contract where he is required to piss people off at least once a week, because Aubrey Graham’s missteps seem to come with a calculated regularity. Last week, it was him proclaiming that he was the first person to successfully rap and sing (five words: Bone Thugs, you ignorant douchecougar), and this week, he released “Enough Said,” a new single from a posthumous Aaliyah album that he plans to executive produce. Timbaland already made it clear that it would be disrespectful to make an album without including himself and Missy Elliott, since, you know, they were actually friends/more than friends with Aaliyah before she passed. But it looks like Drake is continuing his creepy obsession with the R&B singer without Tim’s blessing (a wise move, said no one ever).
Picture This: Drake Tattoos Aaliyah's Face On His Back
Drake’s infatuation with Aaliyah is well-known, from his multiple tattoos of the singer to sampling her songs on Take Care, but “Enough Said” sounds like a desperate fantasy concocted by an idolizing fan. Pure and simple, each verse of Drake’s whiny confessional rap, along with his repeated exclamations of “yo, wassup,” are pitiful against Aaliyah’s haunting, soulful melodies. It just doesn’t sound like an organic collaboration between two artists. Of course, that’s somewhat expected because of the posthumous vocals, but something tells me even if Aaliyah were still here, she wouldn’t fuss with Drake. To quote the beloved singer herself, “Who do you think you are now? I can’t believe you got the nerve, boy.”
Do you think Drake is qualified to produce a posthumous Aaliyah album because he's fangirling all over her, or should it be left to people who actually worked with her and knew her? Did I just guide you to your answer? Let us know in the comments section.
