It hardly seems like any time has gone by since Duran Duran released their Mark Ronson-produced comeback All You Need Is Now back in December 2010… and yet, it feels like a small eternity between now and early 2014, when bassist John Taylor promises (or at least hopes) the group's fourteenth studio album will hit record stores… if we have any left by then, that is.
"We are going to get back writing another record at the beginning of next year and we are really looking forward to it," John told Bang Showbiz in a recent interview. "I don't think the new album will be finished by next year but we can always hope. We'd like to have a new album for 2014 because it's what we do."
Details are obviously still pretty scant, but the rumbling rumor is that they'll be working with Ronson once again on the next album, which I can't imagine would be anything but good news, considering the palpable energy and creative resurgence of All You Need Is Now. If that album was a conscious and purposeful attempt to recapture the rambunctious spirit of the band's first two records, it'll be interesting to hear how Mark and the fellas decide to move things forward—hopefully into an entirely new direction altogether. It's going to be a long but exciting wait, that's for sure.
What do you guys hope or expect to hear on the next Duran Duran album? Get the conversation started in our comments section below.
Ryan Lea:
As far as the production goes I really hope they turn up the low end and bass levels in the mix of the new album. AYNIN is a near perfect album, my biggest gripe is that the bass/low end synth in most songs is not nearly loud enough!

They really need to stick with what they do best and they definitely achieved that with working with Mark Ronson. They have to tour again too cuz i got to see them live again!! 2014 does sound like a long time away, I can't wait that long!!

more John Taylor slappin funk bass, better classic Andy-esque guitar riffs, darker material as mentioned below ala 'Night Boat' .... Simon without the beard, pink flamingo orchestra keyboard stabs ala 'View to a Kill' & "Wild Boys'... deeper Simon poetic ruminations.

Like Rio after their debut I don't think they should radically change direction. Keep those old analogue synth sounds coming, mixing them up with modern recording and mixing styles, and maybe go a little more experimental. See 'The Devils' spin-off project as a template - which in turn took the original early Duran Duran sound as its template. They just need to carry on what they do best and not try to fit in with what everyone else is doing. 2014 sounds like a long way off though.
Nathan Stack:
I have no particular expectations, but what I would LIKE to hear is something not necessarily all that different from AYNIN but with a slightly darker edge. Duran are often at their best when they're working with darker material.
