While most of the songs on Washed Out's 2011 debut album Within and Without are classified as "chillwave" thanks to Ernest Greene's penchant for layered synths and muted hooks, the album closer "A Dedication" could be filed under a new genre that I just made up called "cuddlewave." (Copyright proceedings are already in motion, so don't you dare.) It's a beautiful piano-driven track that practically begs for rainy day cuddling; it sounds like the music of peaceful domesticity, as the video for the song suggests.
In between scenes of lake-house dilapidation, the video dwells on the easy pleasures of rural living—reading on a porch, swimming in the lake, playing a weathered piano while a sleepy cat dances on the keys, etc. And even though the actual song was released over a year ago, the music video for "A Dedication" seems to revel in its romantic, slow-paced storytelling. So grab a blanket, smush it into the shape of your favorite person or animal, and get to it. A real person will also work, I guess.
What do you think of the new "A Dedication" video? Do you want to be the cat that walks on Ernest Greene's piano? Let us know in our comments section.
