After her team learned they'd be cooking Indian cuisine with ingredients they already purchased, chef Sue Torres had a lot of improvising to do. She was ultimately sent packing on the premiere of Top Chef Masters season 4 when her dessert didn't live up to the judges' standards.
We caught up with Sue to talk more about her elimination. Check it out below!

How did it feel being the first chef to leave?
Shocking. No one wants to be the first one to leave. I'm confident in my skills as a chef and I didn't have enough time to showcase them on the show.
Did you go into the show with any sort of strategy?
Yes, to win the most money for my charity, Cystic Fibrosis.
It's a bit of a running joke on TC that you have to be very careful when making desserts because people often get sent home for them. Did that cross your mind at all?
I make all of my desserts at Suenos, so I feel comfortable with that part of the competition.
Why do you think they picked you over Takashi? His dish wasn't deemed Indian cuisine either.
I thought my dish had the most Indian spices and influences. Yes, I was surprised.
If you had been on the other team, do you think you would have won?
YES, Mexican is what I build my career on. I would have given some interesting perspective on Mexican cuisine.
In retrospect, if someone did go back to the store, would you have made the same dish?
No, I'd make Yellow Dal, yellow lentils with Indian herbs and spices with Dosai.
Who are your rooting for now?
They are all very talented chefs, the competition is tough but I am rooting for my hometown chef, Kerry Heffernan.
Would you do Top Chef again?
Yes, I feel like I let down my charity, Cystic Fibrosis. I'd like another opportunity to win money for them.
