Deftones just dropped a stunning new video for current Koi No Yokan (my review) single "Swerve City." Directed by Gus Black, the clip features a beautiful, mysterious female protagonist riding her horse (no, not a white pony) across a gorgeously expansive desert terrain for a bit before Chino Moreno shows up in his car and, well… you'll just have to see.

Watch: Deftones Dedicate "Jump" Cover To Kriss Kross' Chris Kelly
News of Kriss Kross member Chris "Mac Daddy" Kelly's death (the 34-year-old Totally Krossed Out rapper passed away yesterday afternoon in a suspected but unconfirmed drug overdose) inspired the Deftones (whose earliest material fused heavy alternative metal with '90s hip-hop sensibilities) to cover Kriss Kross' smash hit "Jump" during their show at The Pageant in St. Louis, Missouri last night.

Their version of "Jump" incorporates bits from their own Adrenaline fan favorite "Engine 9." (My favorite part? Drummer Abe Cunningham's t-shirt is "backwards and inside-out"&hell...
Deftones Guitarist Stephen Carpenter Responds To Chi Cheng's Death
After a long and tough weekend for family, friends and fans of founding Deftones bassist Chi Cheng—who passed away Saturday after living in a semi-vegetative state for years following a 2008 auto accident—guitarist Stephen Carpenter released a statement on Facebook fondly remembering his friend and bandmate.

"There are so many things I can say, and yet at this moment, none of it matters or compares to the loss everyone feels," says Carpenter. "There will be a hole in our lives where Chi once was. But that will be fille...
Some massively sad news for Deftones fans: founding bassist Chi Cheng died yesterday after years of living in a semi-vegetative state following a near-fatal car accident in November 2008. Cheng was 42 years old.

From a statement released by his family:
"This is the hardest thing to write to you. Your love and heart and devotion to Chi was unconditional and amazing. I know that you will always remember him as a giant of a man on stage with a heart for every one of you. He was taken to the emergency room and at 3 am today his heart just suddenly stopped. He left this world with me singing songs he liked in his ear."

"There's a lot of aggression in some of the music, but there's also this very soothing element where there's a lot of soundscapes rather than attack, attack, attack the whole time," Deftones singer Chino Moreno recently told Billboard (see below), describing the band's forthcoming seventh studio album, set to drop sometime this fall. "I understand that's a big part of our sound, but I really feel like we reached a peak on our dynamics on this record with those two qualities -- the beauty of something and just straight, ruthless aggression."
Best evidence? The band premiered two beautifully aggressive new songs, "Rosemary" and "Roller Derby," during a pair of intimate Hollywood gigs this weekend. Check out some fan videos of both performances below.
"Rosemary"
Love the spacious, ominous opening (great to see Chino on guitar again!) and how it builds up into this gargantuan post-Helmet sludge metal stomp. I don't know, guys, this is kind of exactly what I'd hoped to hear on the next Deftones record—sweeping layers of guitar/keyboards, rapturously evocative Chino Moreno vocals and, of course, Stephen Carpenter's trademark grinding, paint-off-the-walls riffs.
"Roller Derby"
…Meanwhile, for all the old school Adrenaline and Around The Fur era fans, "Roller Derby" is a classic bit of scream-and-breathe business that, alas, doesn't benefit much from the much-to-be-desired audio/video quality. Oh well, c'est la vie, right? Sounds heavy as shit and tight as hell. Why wouldn't it be, right?
