At this point, it's pretty… well, pointless to keep yelling, "Sell out!" at Green Day… but I'm thinking we need to come up with something else to call Billie Joe Armstrong & Co. in light of this latest bit of Green Day news. According to reports, the 40-year-old frontman has signed on to guest mentor Christina Aguilera's team of singers on the next season of The Voice, which began filming earlier this week and premieres September 10.

"[The Voice] is not molding artists, it's just giving them a little bit of guidance and direction without giving them a complete makeover," explains Armstrong, defending his so un-punk rock, it's not even funny new career move. If you can count Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine (I don't) and Mathbox Twenty singer Rob Thomas (on the fence), Billie Joe will be only the third rock 'n' roll mentor on The Voice, a bit of trivia I'm sure won't be lost on the platoons of frustrated old school Green Day fans currently grinding their teeth into fine white powder.
Recording on a major label is one thing… penning a Broadway musical is another… I don't know, have Green Day finally shed the last few shreds of "punk" credibility with this decidedly unforeseen move, one I can only assume is, in part, designed to promote the upcoming trilogy of new albums (the first, ¡Uno!, drops September 25)?
