At 54 years young, you’d think that Thurston Moore would know how this whole “birthday” ritual worked. Instead of celebrating with his fire hazard of a birthday cake and take the day off, Thurston has decided to gift us all with a new song from his post-Sonic Youth band Chelsea Light Moving. “Frank O’Hara Hit,” a grungy, distortion-drenched track, seems to take thematic inspiration from its namesake—just like the avant-garde New York School poet who was known for his sense of artistic immediacy, the sudden tempo shifts and abstract lyrics on “Frank O’Hara Hit” reflect Moore’s musical past while carefully distancing himself enough to quell any “Sonic Youth 2.0!” critics.

Speaking about the song on his record label Matador’s website, Moore said, “I wanted to release this song by the end of July because it’s a meditation on that month through history in events that define a lot of what mytho-romanticizes my heart, both broken and blessed at the moment.” He then outlines some very impactful events that occurred in the month of July, beginning and ending with one of his musical inspirations, Bob Dylan. I can only imagine what “breaks and blesses” him at the moment, but I’m seriously considering sending him 54 copies of Daydream Nation as a birthday present and see if he thinks it’s cute.

UPDATE: So apparently Thurston's old age is affecting him, because the song originally he posted as "Frank O'Hara Hit" is actually a song called "Empires of Time." The real "Frank O'Hara Hit" can de downloaded here. My interpretation, however, is still correct.
