There are two circulating theories as to the meaning of Wiz Khalifa’s new song title, “Far From Coach.” It could refer to Wiz giddily sipping Cristal in his private jet and swapping drunken witticisms with his colleagues The Game and Stat Quo while the uncouth peons flying in coach scarf down their packaged peanuts and silently weep into their plush neck pillows over being middle-class. Or it could be a painfully-aware socioeconomic commentary on the Coach purse, a bag that was once a status symbol only to be mercilessly out-classed by more expensive purses and thus becoming an allegory for the “keeping up with the Joneses” mentality that runs rampant even in the highest levels of hip-hop. I really just don’t know what goes on in that crazy head of his.
What I do know is that the track isn’t half bad, with Wiz serving up his typical hit of chilled-out weed-rap while he brings along The Game and Atlanta-based rapper Stat Quo to emulate his characteristic good-life nonchalance. And even though it cracks me up to hear The Game’s pronunciation of the word “swordfish,” I’m liking this return of a Kush & OJ-style Wiz way more than what he delivered on Rolling Papers, which gives me hope that, even though "Far From Coach" isn't featured on his upcoming album O.N.I.F.C., Wiz will nonethelessreturn to a less commercialized, radio-tailored sound and just do his thing.
