It must suck being only the second most talked-about member of Odd Future for a change, but Tyler, The Creator appears to be taking things in stride. The proudly obnoxious up and comer (whose "defense" of Frank Ocean's sexuality is still one of the biggest Fail moment of the summer) has been keeping fairly busy, chipping in on channel ORANGE bonus track "Golden Girl" and, bizarrely, teaming up with chilled-out indietronic star Toro Y Moi on a spacey bit of business called "Hey You." Thoughts?
Per usual, Tyler's weird pitched down creepy old pervert voice just sounds… well, dumb… but the beats and production are a knock out. Love the thick, warm synth chords and the distant, sparse piano notes. Throw in a few wonky sound effects and vocal snippets and you've got a busy but engrossing can of Marley's Mellow Mood of a single. Yes, Tyler, we're used to your kind of poo, but keep working with people like Toro Y Moi and I'll be willing to give you a second (or third… fourth…) chance.
(p.s. See that sideways "Wait, why am I here again?" look Chazwick Bundick is shooting Tyler in the photo above? Absolutely priceless.)
