Alvaro commented on The 2013 Oscar Snubs: Or, How 'The Dark Knight Rises,' Um, Didn't:
“I'm honestly baffled. If Avengers got a nod for effects, DRK could have at least gotten a nomination for a lesser category like sound, score, or supporting actor. This has to be motivated by some insider intrigue, there's no other explanation.”

Holy Opening Weekend, Batman!

Olivia Cho
The Dark Knight Rises

Unless you've been living in a (Bat)cave since 2008, you're probably aware that The Dark Knight Rises is not only one of this year's most anticipated films, but a long-awaited end to arguably one of the greatest trilogies to grace the silver screen. Here are some figures to put these assertions into perspective:

  • The Dark Knight Rises, which hits theaters midnight tonight at the earliest, has already raked in $25 million in presale tickets (this constituted 80-85% of ticket sales on Tuesday alone.)
    • It's highly unlikely that any of DKR's ticket sales for Tuesday were for midnight showings, since those were probably snapped up when tickets first went on sale in June. This means that 80-85% of DKR tickets bought on Tuesday were either for absurdly late times on Friday morning or anytime after that.
    • THAT IS OUTRAGEOUS.
  • A MovieTickets survey revealed that 78% of moviegoers would see the film opening weekend.
  • Scalpers are selling tickets outside the Loews Lincoln Square 13 for $65-$100. Which may seem ridiculous, until you look at the Craigslist pricings.
  • From a Warner Brothers exec: “All the major circuits have asked for more frequent pickups from their Brink’s Truck drivers to deposit the record amount of cash they are anticipating."

It's almost certain that the film will gross more than its 2D predecessor The Dark Knight (at $158M, it still remains the highest grossing North American opening weekend ever), but what about more recent contenders? The film lacks the 3D treatment The Amazing Spiderman recieved and contains only one superhero, as opposed to the six Avengers, which topped over $200M its opening weekend. Has America finally been superhero-ed out? Or will The Dark Knight Rises provide a satisfying closure that fans have been demanding over the course of four years? Only time, statistics, and Batman aficionados like the Filmology crew and Max (below) will be able to tell.
