Here we are, guys! It's the finale! Crazy to think it's already over. And yes, I'm still recovering from John's elimination last week, but I'll be OK. Just don't talk to me.
Just kiddingggg. The final three -- chefs Avery, Nookie and Liz are headed to Uruguay. It seems like Avery and Nookie's alliance is still intact and poor Liz is going to have to fight like hell to stay. For "The Course," the chefs must shop in three stores to prepare one dish for local diners. Everything seems to be going well until Avery realizes that it's all beef and chicken, and she prepared to make a seafood dish. Still, she finishes first and is the first to learn that they will be cooking for Curtis and Cat.
"Seriously? So much for cooking for the locals. Sheesh." - Nookie
Liz arrives last and immediately realizes she is cooking steak without any salt. Avery and Nookie don't want to give her any salt, and you can't really blame them. This is the finale. You can't throw your competitor a huge bone like that. She hopes the sausage she puts on top will provide enough flavor to season.
"Should I go out there and hang out with Cat and Curtis?" - Nookie
Nookie finishes early and Avery doesn't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. And neither do I. When Curtis and Cat taste the dishes, they don't know whose dish belongs to who. They immediately say Liz's dish is under-seasoned. They seem to enjoy the light, citrus chicken Avery made. Same goes for Nookie and his chorizo. Except they think it's too sweet.
Avery ends up winning and the exceptional ingredient is that she gets to pick her final opponent. SHOCKER! The other chef goes home right now! I admit, I didn't see that coming! If she's smart, she'll pick Liz... and she does! Surprise! The final "Takeover" will take place in L.A.! Poor Nookie is out.
For the final challenge, Avery and Liz must create a meal with dishes based on the countries they visited. Avery's picks are Thailand, Argentina and Morocco. Liz chooses Italy, Argentina and Thailand.
Insert cheesy product placement. Oh, Bravo. Why do you do this to us?
When the ladies arrive at the market, they come across two fellow cheftestants per store and they must pick one to work with. Avery picks Nick over Nicole. Can't blame her. Liz chooses Chaz over Jenna. Another smart move. Let's go ladies! At this point, I like them both. I'm on Team Avery, but I wouldn't hate the world if the underdog won. Meanwhile, Avery chooses Jenna over Sai.
"I know she can cook." - Avery
At the next shop, Liz must choose between Nookie and John. She chooses John because he's cute. OK, not really. It's because he can cook Italian food, but whatevs. I prefer the latter reason.
"If Liz wins, it will be sweet for me. It will bring me back from the dead." - John
Meanwhile, Avery's KIDS SHOW UP. It's adorable and I immediately start tearing up like a girl. Liz's boyfriend and best friend show up in the kitchen too. And am I the only one who just realized they are cooking for Wolfgang Puck? Too many drinks for me, I guess. Drinks bring tears.
"Hey guys, I'm Nookie. I was your mom's best friend on the show." - Nookie
Hilarious. After commercial break, a bunch of chefs who seem really important walk in. This is getting intense. All her fellow chefs are there too.
"I'm scared shitless, but I really feel like I earned it." - Avery
The judges seem to really enjoy Avery's meal, especially her beef dish, which was perfectly cooked. And when they get to Liz's meal they are blown away by the first dish, but her dessert gets some criticism. It's hard to tell at this point. I think Avery will pull out the win. Cat and Curtis make the rounds asking the guests and it seems split! It comes down to 4 votes!
And the winner is... AVERY! Congrats! Definitely well-deserved.
Thanks for putting up with my recaps every week, guys. I'll be back in action once Top Chef returns! For now, follow me on Twitter!
