In the brand new music video for "Wide Awake," the twenty-seventh (last time I counted) single from Katy Perry's Teenage Dream, our purple-haired hero finds herself magically transported from her backstage dressing room into a dark and gloomy land where there's a stone labyrinth and strawberries and snow and bullish hospital orderlies all sorts of other supernatural hazards. Maybe I just don't know how to pick 'em, but my last painful break-up didn't involve any whimsical journeys into my dreamscape subconscious. Mostly there was just a lot of Netflix and Ben & Jerry's. I feel a little short-changed, to be honest. What the hell, man?

So yeah, spoiler alert, the little girl turns out to be Katy Perry's childhood self. And the charming prince turns out to be a philandering jerk that deserves a knuckle sandwich or two (remind you of anyone?). And the video turns out to be… kind of a "meh, whatever" addition to the Katy canon. It's more or less your standard Alice In Wonderland treatment with some interesting post-relationship subtext rumbling beneath the surface. Period. Granted, there's nothing to really point at and say, "Um, what?" but you know there's not a whole lot going on when the most thrilling moment is the unexpected re-appearance of the apparently life-threatening peppermint bra (see above).
Verdict? It's a fine enough video, but I think we're all… fans and haters alike… ready to see her finally move out of the fluffy Teenage Dream phase and into whatever's next.
