'The Glee Project' Recap: "Theatricality"

The theme for the week made me think of the Lady Gaga episode from season 1 of Glee, and what do you know, "Theatricality" is actually the title of that episode. Which makes sense, because you have to be a little dramatic to pull off her ridiculous outfits. And as it turns it out, someone had to face that challenge this week.

Homework Assignment: “I Hope I Get It” from A Chorus Line

Usually the homework assignments are a hot mess, making me feel bad for the guest mentor who has to smile and pretend that they enjoyed it, but I actually really liked this one. Maybe it’s because the contestants are basically in the same position as the characters in A Chorus Line. I think the song was one they could all relate to, and it wasn’t too over the top. Grant Gustin was the mentor, but he’s only been in like three episodes of Glee, so who really cares? Ali’s been saying since the beginning that she’s a theater girl, so it’s no surprise that she was the winner.

Music Video: “When I Grow Up” by The Pussycat Dolls

Remember when The Pussycat Dolls were a thing? Now Nicole Scherzinger is just a failed X-Factor judge. Anyway, each of the contestants had to portray a certain pop superstar. Let’s break it down: Michael was Elvis, Aylin was Madonna, Abraham was David Bowie, Blake was Boy George, Lily was Cyndi Lauper, Ali was Katy Perry, Shanna was Lady Gaga, and Nellie was Britney Spears, just to torture her I suppose. Come on, Nellie, it’s not like they made you dance with a snake! Shanna, however, had to wear a dead animal. I get that they wanted her in the infamous meat dress, but did they really have to use real meat?

As for the actual video: holy lens flares! Did J.J. Abrams direct this? Everyone dancing in all-out costumes and makeup was kind of crazy, but it was theatricality week after all.

Last Chance Performances:

Nellie – “I’m The Only One” by Melissa Etheridge

Like I said last week, Nellie has a lovely voice, but does she really have a place on Glee?  Ryan was concerned about her lack of passion, and Nikki wondered whether she even wanted on be Glee at all.

Abraham – “Stereo Hearts” by Gym Class Heroes

I feel like there’s more to Abraham as a performer that we haven’t gotten a chance to see. However, I was happy to see him own his androgyny after it initially made him uncomfortable.

Lily – “Someone Like You” by (the flawless) Adele

Well, it wasn’t Adele. Not even close. Lily was defensive again about her performance in the video, but to be fair, Cyndi Lauper is a difficult person to emulate.

Not Called Back: Nellie

The judges questioned Nellie’s drive, but seeing the sob that came out when she looked at the list, it’s hard to say that she didn’t really want it. The problem is that at this point in the competition, if you aren’t jumping up and down and waving your arms and shouting “LOOK AT ME, RYAN!” you’re probably going to be passed over.

SumOlogy: The competition is getting tougher than ever, and the difficult cuts are about to begin.

Grade: B +

Sharon Tharp: I think it was Nellie's time to go. She seemed to be uncomfortable with EVERY challenge EVERY week. How can someone like that act on a hit TV show? Anyway, MICHAEL FTW! lol
