Pretty Little Liars couples come and go, but storylines are forever; and the ones weaved between all of our pretty little Rosewood players have made for three seasons of smokin' hookups, disastrous breakups, steamy reunions, and illicit affairs. Even the pairings that haven't locked lips yet are still on our radar. Before tonight's new episode (8pm EST, ABC Family), we analyze and grade every single couple in PLL history. Which duo landed as the hottest of the hot? Dig in below:
Melissa Hastings & Jason DiLaurentis (Pre-Season 1)
We’ve never actually seen Melissa and Jason together, but Alison made it known that they were sneaking around… and that they were actually half brother and sister. During Jason’s stoner years, they were often together because Ian and Jason were friends, but Jason has made a complete turn-around, and Melissa, well, she’s just as suspicious as ever. Hotness: 23/100
Mona Vanderwaal & Caleb Rivers (Season 2)
Not the best history with these two, since Mona spent most of her time trying to keep Hanna all to herself: She destroyed Caleb’s letter to Hanna and tossed it in the trash, hiding it from her best friend. Then the liars came up with a plan to catch 'A' in the act – Mona and Caleb, in hopes of 'A' sending Hanna a text about the incident, were involved in a successful mission to catch Melissa in the act; but boy did the tables turn (get it?) when Mona revealed herself as 'A.' However, it’s kind of strange that it’s Mona who is still coming between Haleb. It’s a proven fact that Mona and Caleb should never be together. Hotness: 26/100
Jenna Marshall & Detective Wilden (Pre-Season 1)
Jenna and Wilden were seen staring each other down during a flirty moment in the Halloween episode, but we hope to never see them together again. We put them on our hotness meter just to remind everyone to keep a lookout for this unlikely couple. Hotness: 27/100
Jenna Marshall & Noel Kahn (Season 2)
We’ve only seen Jenna and Noel together a few times, and they were pretty close and awfully suspicious. Mona and Hanna caught them on a dinner date, and they were seen under the black lights during Rosewood’s Truth Up Day. The girls recently found out that Jenna can see, and she had some pretty convincing arguments, but we haven’t seen Noel in a while. Hotness: 31/100
Jenna Marshall & Toby Cavanaugh (Season 1)
Without a doubt Rosewood’s strangest couple, we couldn’t figure out if Toby had a thing for blind girls or Jenna had a thing for stepbrothers, but we soon learned that there were real feelings behind their secret affair. Either way, they promptly broke up once Toby got an eyeful of that willowy Spencer chick. Can we give out hotness points based on how happy
we are that they’re over? Hotness: 34/100
Spencer Hastings and Ian Thomas (Pre-Season 1)
See, Spencer has this tendency to, you know, come between Melissa and whoever she’s dating at the time. Ian wanted to help Spencer with her field hockey moves…and keep the kiss they shared a secret. Poor Melissa, she still doesn’t know about the connection between Spian. This gives a whole new meaning to taking a secret to the grave. Hotness: 35/100
Emily Fields & Ben Coogan (Season 1)
Yep, Emily actually dated a guy, remember? We’re shocked, too. This couple was actually pretty hot and heavy while Emily was trying to hide her true self, but it was only a cover. We can’t deny that we’re glad Toby intervened for a showdown with Ben in the locker room. Hotness: 36/100
Alison DiLaurentis & Noel Kahn (Pre-Season 1)
Alison was the Queen Bee of manipulation, and Noel was a gynecologist for Halloween, so that speaks for itself. Ali and Noel made a plan to prank the girls, but it didn’t turn out the way they’d hoped. These two would have been way too much popular for Rosewood to handle, so let’s just be thankful that they were never really a couple. Hotness: 37/100
Lucas Gottesman & Danielle (Season 2)
We’ve only seen Danielle in one episode (and never found out her last name), but we couldn’t help but like her since she had a thing for Lucas. They had a double date with Hanna and Caleb, and we give kudos to Hanna for being a great friend by helping Lucas through his nervousness. Bonus points for Lucas coming out of his shell! Hotness: 39/100
Isabel Randall & Tom Marin (Season 1-current)
Trouble has been the only thing Hanna has had to deal with since her dad started dating Isabel. Although she isn’t the main problem, her daughter Kate made Hanna’s life a living hell. 'A' tried to get Hanna to ruin the wedding, and even after she confessed the truth to Isabel about her parents’ affair, they tied the knot and Kate showed up at Rosewood High (nicer than ever??). Kate has actually been more of a focus than Isabel and Tom, who have faded into the not-so-hot background. Hotness: 40/100
Byron Montgomery & Meredith Sorenson (Season 1-current)
We just have a bad taste in our mouths when we think of Meredith and Byron together, and it’s even worse when you remember that he wanted Aria to keep it a secret from Ella. Because these two were sneaking around at one time, drama was a frequent visitor in the Montgomery home. They were caught making out in Byron’s car, and now it looks like they may start dating publicly! We’re just hoping that things won’t work out… Hotness: 42/100
Aria Montgomery & Noel Kahn (Season 1)
Well, if nothing else, these two make a great duet: Aria with the vocals and Noel on the guitar. Fans were unsure if “Naria” was going to become an item, but as expected, not even Noel Kahn can come between Ezria. His creepy factor and 'A' didn’t really help his case, and while the two individually are ranked at the top of hotness, together they lose some points after Noel creepily wrote a message on a car during an Ezria make-out sesh. Hotness: 44/100
Alison DiLaurentis & Ian Thomas (Pre-Season 1)
Ali had a reputation of always getting what she wanted, and she always had her eyes on Ian Thomas, Melissa’s deceased husband. We'll never forget the infamous video where Ali met Ian at Kissing Rock, and when 'A' handed out special showings of that video in the graveyard and left copies as gifts for the girls. These two were never Facebook official, but since Ian more than likely had something to do with Ali’s murder, maybe we should deem them one of Rosewood’s not-so-hot pairings? Hotness: 45/100
Ella Montgomery & Ezra Fitz (Season 1-current)
Okay, these two teachers haven’t actually dated, but you thought they might just be interested in each other for a little while, didn’t you? They were friends before Aria and Ezra made their relationship public, and Ella’s obviously the faithful one in her marriage, so dating Ezra wouldn’t have been the right thing to do. However, we give them points based on their hotness potential! Hotness: 48/100
Jenna Marshall & Garrett Reynolds (Season 2)
Jarrett was trying to keep things quiet about their relationship so the liars wouldn’t think they were guilty of Alison’s murder; but the girls always reveal the secrets hidden around Rosewood, and they uncovered this couple locking lips in Jenna’s bedroom. However, it turns out that Jenna was just using Garrett, and she was the one who put him behind bars after turning in Alison’s medical records to the police. That’s… hot? Hotness: 49/100
Melissa Hastings & Ian Thomas (Seasons 1-2)
Definitely Rosewood’s most suspicious couple: these two eloped and Melissa returned to Rosewood, pregnant for the second time. They've definitely been hiding something, but now only Melissa lives to tell the tale. No one ever really wanted Melissa and Ian together, and there’s still so much drama surrounding the two, but we've got to give it to them for sticking together until death did them part. Hotness: 52/100
Jessica DiLaurentis & Peter Hastings (Pre-Season 1/moment in Season 2)
We only got to see these two interact over the phone and during the fashion show in honor of Alison, but they were mighty suspicious during their “business” calls. It turns out that our suspicions were correct: Jason is actually Peter’s son, and Spencer and Melissa’s half-brother. Things obviously got pretty hot and heavy between the neighbors, and only Alison knew their dirty little secret. Hotness: 53/100
Melissa Hastings & Garrett Reynolds (Season 2-3)
We’re pretty sure that Garrett is actually the father of Melissa’s baby. The liars found out that the two were connected, and Melissa’s been at the top of their 'A' list ever since. Garrett and Melissa shared a kiss before he was arrested for Alison’s murder, and now we think Melissa (and her baby) is the reason Veronica Hastings is so willing to defend Garrett’s case. Melissa just needs to find someone to date outside of the N.A.T. Club! Hotness: 54/100
Jackie Molina & Ezra Fitz (Season 2)
Ezra’s first secret came to light when Aria discovered a picture of Ezra and Jackie on his computer, and found out the two were engaged a short time before Jackie broke things off. It seems like someone is always trying to come between Ezria, and Jackie is no exception. She tried her best to start things up again with Ezra when she started teaching at Hollis College, but Ezra was quick to turn her down, and we haven’t seen her in Rosewood since. Hotness: 55/100
Emily Fields & Toby Cavanaugh (Season 1)
Remember that time when Emily thought she might be into boys, and she actually went to homecoming with Toby? Yeah, we thought that was kind of weird too. Just when we all thought Toby was Alison’s killer, he does something great by taking Emily home safely after she fell during the dance. To put the icing on the cake, Emily actually believed that Toby was innocent. At least their friendship is way hotter than Toby’s secret "relationship" with Jenna. Hotness: 56/100
Aria Montgomery & Holden Strauss (Season 2)
These two have never really been "together," but with Aria and Holden playing each other’s beard in order to hide their secrets, you can't say it wasn't a possibility. Even though the Ezria fans initially cringed at the thought of another guy with Aria, Holden became everyone’s hero. The two get points for that, right? Hotness: 58/100
Emily Fields & Samara Cook (Season 2)
Samara worked for the LGBT Pride group and agreed to meet with Emily's pet project Paige, but after she was a no-show, Emily met her new fling. Samara helped Emily cover her fake acceptance to Danby, and we thought there may be some competition for Emily when we met Quinn at the fashion show honoring Alison. After 'A' forces Emily to give Quinn her number or her medical records would go public, Samara ends the relationship until Emily can give her a real reason for basically asking Quinn out. Hotness: 60/100
Ashley Marin & Tom Marin (Season 1-2)
This recently-divorced couple has had their fair share of arguments, which mainly focused on their daughter Hanna: Tom had a habit of only showing up in Rosewood when she was in trouble or when he’s breaking the news that he was getting married again. Ashley hasn’t had the best of luck with men, but add a little alcohol, and an affair between these two divorcees is bound to happen – oh, and it totally did. Their affair almost ruined Tom and Isabel’s wedding, but we don’t hold that against them: who actually wanted Tom to marry Isabel? Hotness: 61/100
Veronica Hastings & Peter Hastings (Season 1-current)
This marriage seemed to be a little rocky from the beginning, and things tend to get a little more complicated for the couple as things get worse for their children: Peter’s been somewhat in the middle of Alison’s murder investigation, and Veronica is now defending Garrett Reynolds, so the couple is rarely seen together. But… they're mysterious. That can be sexy, right? Hotness: 62/100
Hanna Marin & Sean Ackard (Season 1)
These two were Rosewood High’s popular girl/jock couple, and we admit, they were pretty cute together. But they also had their differences: Sean was a member of the Virginity Club, and Hanna was trying to find a way to lose hers. Also, Hanna’s never really been sure if Sean would have dated her had Alison not interfered. She eventually crashed Sean’s car after Noel Kahn’s party, and it was pretty hot how Sean took the heat for his girlfriend. However, these two called it quits after 'A' demanded that Hanna dance with Lucas for cash to replace what went missing from her mother’s stash in the pasta boxes. Hotness: 63/100
Melissa Hastings & Wren Kingston (Season 1)
Melissa and Ian were hot, but Melissa and Wren seemed perfect for each other: Wren was a medical student (now a doctor) and Melissa’s always been competitive. Too bad her boy actually had eyes for the younger Hastings sister. Oops! It seems that this Mr. Right was all wrong for Melissa, but they get points for the effort. Hotness: 64/100
Mona Wanderwaal & Noel Kahn (Season 2)
Nona actually stayed strong for a while, but that never took away from their suspiciousness. Their relationship made sense, but Hanna didn’t want to see her best friend get hurt. Noel broke up with Mona, and she resorted to buying sweater sets and blends as part of her therapy. Nonetheless, their dip in the lake during Lucas’s surprise party gets some credit. Hotness: 65/100
Pam & Wayne Fields (Season 1-current)
The Fields haven’t been seen together often since Wayne is a US Army Colonel, but he returned home just in time to help his wife deal with Emily coming out of the closet. He’s much more accepting of Emily’s lifestyle, and helped convince his wife to accept their daughter for who she is. They haven’t had much interaction as a couple, but Pam did move to Texas so she could be with her husband. Relocating is so sexy! Hotness: 67/100
Hanna Marin & Wren Kingston (Season 3-current)
Although these two aren’t necessarily a couple, don’t tell us you haven’t thought about it lately. Wren’s been working shifts at Radley and trying to help Hanna through her tough times with Mona, and Hanna can’t really turn to Caleb for help anymore. Wrenna (we’ve decided this would be a good shipper name) has had some heart to heart conversations, and even though we’re definitely Team Haleb, these two would make a cute couple. Hotness: 69/100
Aria Montgomery & Jason DiLaurentis (Season 2)
Possibly Team Ezria’s favorite couple to hate: after Jason returned to Rosewood, he had his sights set on finding out the truth about his sister’s death, but as the two got closer, Aria actually started to question if she had feelings for Jason… and even had some intense dreams about him. Although they remained only friends, Jaria shared a pretty passionate kiss, and Jason gave Aria a sentimental, yet kind of creepy, parting gift. Even if this couple only gets points for Jason’s abs, they deserve 'em! Hotness: 71/100
Ella Montgomery & Byron Montgomery (Season 1-Season 3)
This on-again, off-again couple was pretty much ruined after Ella found out that Byron was cheating on her with one of his students. So it's been hard to catch them in a romantic moment because they’ve been dealing with Byron’s actions, Ezria, and whatever Mike has been up to. But the few episodes where these two were actually sneaking around to date each other were definitely thrilling. These two finally called it quits, but can we give them hot points based on how much we want them to stay together? Hotness: 74/100
Alison DiLaurentis & Emily Fields (Pre-Season 1/kiss in Season 2)
One of Rosewood’s not-so-romantic couples that you really wanted to happen! These two actually shared more than one kiss: one in a flashback, and one in a dream (or was it a dream?). Alison DiLaurentis, mean girl or not, was Emily’s first love, and she’s been heartbroken ever since she stumbled upon a lifeless Alison being carried off in a body bag. Hotness: 77/100
Hanna Marin & Lucas Gottesman (Season 1-2)
Everyone has always rooted for the beauty and the geek: Lucas always had a thing for Hanna, and even if he chose to cover those feelings with his snide remarks, he eventually started to help Hanna realize that she’s a great person. He even pushed Hanna and Caleb together because he knew it made her happy; however, Hanna’s always seen Lucas as more of a friend, and we’re guessing that’s mostly why Lucas went all psycho. Nevertheless, we’re going to focus on the positive and hope that Lucas isn’t a member of the 'A' team. Hotness: 78/100
Ashley Marin & Detective Darren Wilden (Season 1)
This couple takes us all the way back to the Pilot: Hanna’s shoplifting charges were ignored because Ashley took matters into her own hands by sleeping with Wilden, who was actually investigating Alison’s murder. Although we’re not a fan of Wilden's snooping, we didn’t really mind seeing him walk around the Marin kitchen in a towel, and Ashley is definitely one of the hotter moms on the show. They get some cred because Wilden will always be Ashley’s dirty little secret.
Hotness: 81/100
Emily Fields & Paige McCullers (Season 2-Season 3)
We weren’t really sure if Paige really hated Emily considering, you know, the fact that she tried to drown her. But we got some affirmation when Paige grabbed Emily and kissed her after swim practice. Whether you like this couple together or not, that kiss was hot! Emily encouraged Paige to love herself for who she is, and though Paige eventually came out to her parents, these two chose to remain great friends. But there’s always hope for the future, right? Hotness: 82/100
Spencer Hastings & Wren Kingston (Season 1-2)
Yet another one of Melissa’s men who couldn’t stay away from her sister; the attraction between Wrencer was undeniable from the beginning. Spencer even split up the engagement between Melissa and Wren when Melissa caught them making out in Spencer’s room. Even though the couple never got together once Toby entered the picture, you can still feel a connection when Spencer and Wren are in the same room. Hotness points galore for the drunken Spencer/Wren scenes! Hotness: 85/100
Emily Fields &Maya St. Germain (Season 1-2)
It’s a little painful to discuss this couple considering Maya’s recent death, but reminiscing on the good times eases the pain: Emily met Maya when she was still confused, and Maya eventually made her both certain about and comfortable with her sexuality. That’s what really makes these two such a great couple. Plus, they’ve had some pretty steamy moments together, like before Maya left for camp and when she returned to Rosewood. Hotness: 92/100
Spencer Hastings & Alex Santiago (Season 1)
Everyone remembers the dancing scene between this couple in the Rosewood Country Club kitchen! It was hard for the Hastings to accept that Spencer was dating a guy like Alex because he was only a ball boy at the country club. These two defied the odds and stuck together despite Spencer’s parents, but 'A' came between one of our favorite couples by anonymously sending an application to a tennis clinic in Sweden. Alex thought Spencer submitted his name, and walked out on her at Hanna’s homecoming party. Things didn’t work out between Spalex, but they'll always hold a special place in our Rosewood hearts. Hotness: 96/100
Spencer Hastings & Toby Cavanaugh (Season 1-current)
Funny enough, Spencer was the main person who didn’t believe Toby’s story that he wasn’t involved in Alison’s murder mystery. The two bonded over a game of Scrabble, and things have been SMOKING HOT ever since their first kiss. The Hastings disapproved of Toby because of his reputation, but Spencer happened to be in the same place by being a person of interest in the murder of Alison DiLaurentis. Spencer’s answer to A’s demands, in order to keep Toby safe, was to end things with the boy she loved, but they overcame A’s games and remained one of Rosewood’s hottest couples! Hotness: 97/100
Hanna Marin & Caleb Rivers (Season 1-current)
It’s hard to think there was actually a time when these two weren’t so fond of each other: Hanna worried too much about her looks, and Caleb let her know it. Then again, Caleb wasn’t so worried about his looks… and Hanna let him know it. After Hanna let this homeless hottie crash in her basement, they became a very hot item. These two have had their ups and downs (and they'll always have that shower scene), but their heart-crushing breakup cost them the one hot point they needed to land on top. Hotness: 99/100
Aria Montgomery & Ezra Fitz (Season 1-current)
Although they were once teacher and student, they always defied the odds (and Aria’s parents) and remained together even through those nasty 'A' interventions. No matter how many times Byron tried to destroy them, and Jackie Molina showed her face, Ezria remained one of the strongest pairs on the show, even while publicly coming out. The secrets are definitely not over between these two, but they'll forever be one of the hottest couples in Rosewood. Hotness: 100/100
