I know I have not been here for a while (been hanging out with the BeingFans gang) but I just had to share this great discovery I just made while looking up pictures for an Aidan art I am working on.
Episode 2.11 ‘Don’t Fear the Scott’, Suren tells a story of black orchid Mother gave her to make peace with her after a fight. Well it turns out Mother didn’t pick out just any flower. She sure knows how to get her messages across!
“Black orchids are a symbol of power and absolute authority. Although it is thought of having dark connotations, the black orchid is a sign of the elite class. They are formal and very classy.”
Power and authority, formal and classy? Wow, is that not Mother’s coven exactly!?
Personally I took away from the black orchid story a metaphor for what Suren was doing to Aidan. She spoke of how she had wanted that flower to die(which by the way is quite a symbol in itself considering that it represented her being heir to the throne) and thus ignored it. But somehow it thrived and she realized that Aidan had been caring for it. Well now that is exactly what she did doing to Aidan. She nursed the inner monster(taking full advantage of his hospital supply cut off) in him that he wanted gone with live blood and sex until he too thrived. The only difference being that he didn’t notice :(.
So I found this also interesting about the flower in regards to Aidan:
“Black orchids derive their name from the Greek “orchis”, which is the Greek word for testicle. Therefore, the black orchid was seen as a symbol of virility.”
I love how the writers did their research and actually chose the perfect symbolic flower. They never cease to amaze me.
