The Oscar voters have been accused in the past of being arrogant, elitist, and out of touch when it comes to choosing nominees for the Best Picture category: after 84 years of the Academy Awards, it’s pretty safe to say that summer box office smashes aren’t getting anywhere near the Best Picture pool because the Oscars are serious business people! But that may change if early reactions to the highly anticipated The Dark Knight Rises are any indication, as movie critics were treated to an early screening of the film and—according to the Twitter mill—they gave a standing ovation when the credits began to roll. How about that? Stodgy, pretentious critics applauding a superhero film currently predicted to rake in more than the $158.4 million gathered by its predecessor, The Dark Knight!
And in 2009, the internet went into a tizzy when Oscar nominations for Best Picture were announced and The Dark Knight wasn’t on the list, and the outcry is said to be the reason why the Academy expanded the category to include as many as ten films instead of five. What's worse, Christopher Nolan in all his genius, innovative, spectacular glory (that may be a bit much, but whatever, it’s Nolan) has never won Best Director, but worse yet he’s never even been nominated. Unacceptable!

Despite all the snubs, Nolan says he can’t be mad. "The academy's been incredibly good to me and my films, and it would be churlish of me to complain," Nolan said.
It may be too soon to tell if The Dark Knight Rises will be the film to shake up the Oscars, especially since it’s coming out in July instead of later in the year when the "prime contenders" go to bat. But with a cast that includes Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, and Gary Oldman (can someone please give him a damn Oscar already!), and a director as brilliant as Nolan, I’d say the chances of Batman riding the Batmobile all the way to the Oscar stage are good.
Do you think The Dark Knight Rises will break the mold, or is the Academy too set in its ways?
