So what does The Cure frontman Robert Smith do when faced with technical difficulties on stage? Go back to his dressing room, turn off all the lights, bury himself under a mountain of stuffed animals and sob uncontrollably? That was my guess too, but alas, no—he grabs an acoustic guitar and performs three classics from Boys Don't Cry, to the amazement and delight of audience members and music editors worldwide.
"Don't applaud too loudly or you'll give me ideas," Smith told the audience at yesterday's BBK Festival in Spain, tearing through "Three Imaginary Boys," "Fire In Cairo" and "Boys Don't Cry" while the road crew worked tirelessly the get the band's delayed set off the ground. You can (and should) check out all three songs below.
"It's been quite a long time since I busted out this," he laughs at one point. Could've fooled us. I'm not saying I don't miss the full band's monolithic keyboards and shimmering Gothic guitar textures, but the songs really hold up, even stripped to their barest essentials. The slower take on "Boys Don't Cry" especially gave me shivers in a couple places. (A couple places during the song… not a couple places on my… well, no, okay, I was right the first time. Nevermind.) Please do get ideas, Robert!
