A useless report that's surprised absolutely no one has accused former FIFA president João Havelange and his son-in-law, former Brazilian football chief and FIFA executive committee member Ricardo Teixeira, of receiving millions of dollars worth of bribes during their time in charge. We're as shocked as you.
In typical FIFA style, the two accused parties don't really have much official power these days, so nothing will come of this. If the Swiss prosecutors who wasted their time writing this report had focused on the corruption of, say, Sepp Blatter, THEN we might be getting somewhere. Unfortunately, until FIFA chooses to invest significant resources in weeding out corruption, money and insider deals will continue to rule international soccer.
We should note, too, that Teixeira's alleged guilt in this current round of corruption investigations serves FIFA's interests; Ricardo left his post as the head of Brazilian soccer earlier this year after repeated clashes with FIFA over the staging of World Cup 2014, which has been fraught with violence and disputes over booze.
The only truly amazing aspect of these "revelations" is that Sepp Blatter, the fat, corrupt old toad who runs FIFA, is still in charge and will remain so for a few more years. Guess who voted for him? EVERYBODY, INCLUDING AMERICA, BECAUSE HE RAN UNOPPOSED.
Just another day in one of the most corrupt governing bodies on the globe.
