Truth be told, many dirt-cheap, low-key drugstore beauty products are just as good as, if not better than the over-priced counter cosmetics. But for whatever reasons on earth, some of us just can't seem to resist the temptation and keep going back to those bank-breaking little devils. I wonder, is it because of the vain — the satisfaction and the envious glances you get when walking away with five full bags of M.A.C. eyeshadows and YSL lipsticks — or simply because of your burning desire of wanting to prove to the snobby, cold-shoulder giving makeup artist that you actually have the dough?! Don't be ashamed if you're secretly nodding, after all, we are human and have all been there!
However, as an educated, smart consumer, you also deserve to know that you do NOT have to always invest in high-end beauty items when their counterparts are actually great dupes! To get you started on what drugstore goodies to purchase, we did a mini survey both in and outside our office!
Our Editors Recommend:
Who: Lauren, Fashion & Beauty Editor
What: CoverGirl LashBlast Volume Mascara
Why: "I used to use DiorShow, but I lost it once and had to use my sister's drugstore mascara (though I don't condone sharing any makeup that goes so close to the eye), and it worked a bit better than the $28 formula I had sworn by. I haven't looked back from drgustore mascara since 2006, and I'll never pay more than $6 for mascara!"
Who: Sharon, Editor In Chief
What: Burt's Bee Refreshing Lip Balm; Evian Mineral Water Spray
Why: "The balm doesn't get gross and clumpy like other chapsticks or lip glosses, and it's great for both winter and summer because it has SPF!"
"Evian's facial spray is great for days you want to refresh your skin. I use that sometimes when my makeup looks gross. You just spray it and then pat it dry."
Our Interns Recommend:
Who: Dana, Fashion & Beauty Editorial Intern
What: Sonia Kashuk Dramatically Defining Long Wear Gel Liner; Maybelline Expertwear Eyeshadow Quad
Why: "Best eyeliner ever; I swear by it!"
"The eyeshadow quads are really good for smokey eye; it comes with four colors and tells you exactly where to put them!"
Who: Katie, Music Intern
What: Fitness Extra Hold Hairspray Unscented
Why: "It's the only one [that its scent] i can stand, and it doesn't flake after you brush it through!"
Our Friends Recommend:
Who: Roan Peters, Merchandiser at Chloe + Isabel
What: Nivea Body Smooth Sensation Daily Lotion for Dry Skin
Why: "Because it's simply the best! It's not sticky, smooth and makes my skin super soft — very light formula!"
Who: Hailey, Production Development Intern at Alexander Wang
What: Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser
Why: "It's the only thing that keeps my skin clear and oil free!"
Who: Mary, Editorial Intern at Folio Literary Management
What: The Brilliant Brunette collection by John Freida
Why: "It's affordable and easy to find but still feels like something I could get in a salon; and it gives salon results!"
