It’s a new week, so that means a new track has leaked from Nas’s upcoming album Life is Good. (Every week should be this good). From what we’ve heard so far, each new song off the album seems to home in on a critical component of what makes Nas Nas—his role as a father on "Daughters," being a veteran in the game on “The Don”—and the album closer “Bye Baby” is no different. This time, Nas discusses his tumultuous relationship with ex-wife Kelis, which we should have seen coming considering his choice of album art.
With a soulful hook and Nas’s impeccable storytelling, “Bye Baby” is another solid inclusion on an album poised to be a great, if not the best, hip-hop album of the year. Each lyric of the song offers insight into what went wrong between the two, but even after Nas unfolds the whole complicated saga, he ends the song by saying he’d “do it all again.” The Illmatic comparisons are tempting, but that’s a level of perception that only comes with time.
