Long time Massachusetts representative Barney Frank became the first sitting congressman to marry a member of the same sex when he wed longtime partner Jim Ready on Saturday. In related news, Fox is reporting that the last thread holding the moral fiber of America together has officially come undone.
Frank has already announced that he won’t run for reelection this fall, ending a 32-year career as a representative of Massachusetts’ 4th District, meaning he’ll have plenty of time to hang out with his new husband, who’s 42. Wait, what? Jim Ready is 30 years younger than Barney Frank? Something smells fishy here.
No matter which side of the aisle you fall on (GET IT?), this is an historic moment for American politics. Frank has been openly gay since 1987, but we’re not too far removed from the days of Republican Dick Armey referring to Frank as “Barney Fag.” That’s right: Dick Armey called somebody a name. That’s cajones.
Still, Frank’s marriage presents a tricky moral problem. If Frank is allowed to marry a man, it surely can’t be long before a sitting congressman marries a horse, can it? Stay vigilant, America.
