'Louie' Recap: 'Telling Jokes/Set Up'

Emily Cheever
Louis C.K.

Let's talk about all the wonderful things in tonight's episode of Louie. It was all about the set up- the set up to a joke, the set up of a depressed single person, the set up to reciprocal sex. Of course, everything was wrapped up nicely in a Louie-esque bow, which meant peppy foreign music and highly uncomfortable moments to separate you just a little bit from the feel good feeling of typical half hour comedies.

| Related: Last week's season premiere recap |

I love when Louie gets into the kid stuff, the opening of the show. Clearly Louie, (and real life Louis C.K., there still should be a distinction between the two) loves his kids. And why not, those little girls are freaking adorable. C.K. really got his hands on some superb child actors that actually understand the subtleties of the show, even if it's subconscious. The conversation that he has with his kids in relation to comedy is probably the best way to navigate the topic of the fact that "daddy talks about masturbating for his job and throws the word c*nt around." They know he tells jokes, they feel free to say their own and it's wonderfully matter of fact. The matter of factness of their attitude is something really only present in kids and through the ringer middle aged types, which perfectly segues into the second part of the episode.

Louie is tricked into a romantic set up by his married comedian friend. Here we see the sassy and independent Melissa Leo. The two of them abandon the "shit-spreading" of the fighting couple to go get wasted at a bar. It's actually quite charming. I wouldn't go as far as to say romantic, but it's definitely kind of cute to see these two people enjoying each other's miserable company. At the end of the night there is some "romance" in the air as Leo's character pulls over to give Louie a blow job, but then is shocked when he doesn't return the favor. Or as she calls it, strapping on the feeding bag. What follows then is a highly uncomfortable moment of her scolding him for leaving her hanging, him kind of calling her a slut, her accusing him of being gay and then punching him in the head. Leo acts out the act of connilingus by swirling her finger around her clenched fist. She won an Oscar, you guys.

I'm not going to take this valuable recap time to get into the argument of oral sex and if returning the favor is always required. That's something that you might be able to bring up at a dinner party and really have a ball discussing. I will say that it kind of depends where it's all going down. I'm sure it wouldn't have been a question if the two had been in a Smart Car over a giant truck.

Overall, this was a Louie episode and I don’t mean that in strange criticism at all. Only Louis C.K. could fashion an episode about how good of a father he is and then conclude the rest of the show by eating out Melissa Leo in a van. I think that was once a subplot on King of Queens, actually.

Grade: A-

SumOlogy: But seriously, I suggest talking about connilingus at the next dinner party you go to.

What'd you think of tonight's episode?
