Let's be honest… keeping up on the latest Radiohead news has been something of an extra-gloomy task the past couple weeks. Stage collapses, dead drum techs, investigations, postponed tour dates… I don't know, it's all been a bit much, don't you think? It's partly why I've jumped at the chance to tell you that the band has done something CUTE and FUN with POLAR BEARS and JUDE LAW! Hooray!
Okay, so I kind of lied about the "cute" and "fun" part… and maybe it's actually not any less depressing than a collapsing outdoor stage… but hear me out, this is important. The band has lent their Kid A classic "Everything In Its Right Place" to a new Greenpeace short film called "A Homeless Polar Bear In London," created in conjunction with the savethearctic.orgcampaign and featuring an appropriately serious narration by Jude Law. Check it out below.
"We have to stop the oil giants pushing into the Arctic," said Thom Yorke of the film. "An oil spill in the Arctic would devastate this region of breathtaking beauty, while burning that oil will only add to the biggest problem we all face, climate change."
The film is certainly effective… I feel appropriately bummed out, as I'm sure you do. Kid A has always been an appropriately post-apocalyptic listening experience, so watching a polar bear wandering the dirty streets of London with Thom Yorke's processed yelp in the background is an inspired choice. As (I'm sure) intended, I'll be thinking of that poor bear sniffing an exhaust pipe every time I put the record on. Sigh.
It's a great little film with an extremely urgent and important message. As always, you can visit greenpeace.org/SaveTheArcticor follow the Twitter hashtag #SaveTheArcticto find out what you can do to help keep oil conglomerates out of the Arctic.
