Marina Abramovic has been a legend of the art community for some time but it took the epic MoMA exhibit to truly show the public what she was really about. For three months the 63 year old artist took to the main floor of the museum and sat for the duration of working hours, just staring, inviting people to come and sit across from her. On the other levels of the museum were groups of dedicated artists recreating Abramovic's past work, including the exhibit made famous by Sex and the City (you know, when Carrie meets the Russian and they go to see Marina in her studio late at night).
Tonight HBO first airs Marina Ambramovic: The Artist Is Present, a touching and fascinating documentary telling Ambramovic's history and illuminating some behind the scenes moments at MoMA. What you'll see is a powerful and inspirational journey of an artist, as well as what she has inspired over the course of an impressive career.
Marina is beautiful and peaceful, wise even beyond her 63 years, something to be beheld and revered. The documentary itself does a fantastic job of showing her joie de vivre and passion behind each of her project. Plus, it also tells the story of her passionate love affair with the artist Ulay, something I personally find terribly romantic and beautiful.
The documentary airs tonight on HBO at 9PM and will be On Demand.
