Kraftwerk Hint That New Album Is Finally On The Way
In a rare interview with The Guardian published yesterday, Kraftwerk's Ralf Hütter continued to insist that the German electronic pioneers are hard at work on their ninth studio album and long-overdue follow-up to 2003's Tour de France Soundtracks. "Now this is done, one to eight," says Hütter. "Now we can concentrate on number nine."

Are you wearing your favorite bowler hat? Crazy novelty glasses? Crazy-colored fake leather spill-proof jacket? Okay, good, 'cause there's some exciting news in the wild and wonky world of the Pet Shop Boys. As announced earlier this month (see below), the legendary synth-pop duo are returning with a new studio album called Elysium, out September 18 here in the U.S.
We've already gotten a first taste at one new song… the majestically melancholy "Invisible"… and now we've been treated with an official lyrics video for lead single "Winner," which you can (and should) check out below.
First thoughts?
Meh. It's no "Invisible," that's for sure. The chipper synth arrangement is fairly run of the mill… I feel like I've heard this exact same sound on at least two or three other recent Pet Shop Boys… and there isn't much in Neil Tennant's vocal that really leaps out at you, except for, you know, that cringe-worthy chorus lyric. "I'm a winner… you're a winner…" Shudder. It's a little too Stuart Smalley for my tastes, sorry to say. The string arrangement (it's buried in the mix, but I promise it's there) is appropriately stirring, but I couldn't help but wish the song was simultaneously twice as fast and a thousand times more crestfallen.
