Sorry to ruin your fun, Christian extremists, but no, George Michael didn't die (see below). Worse yet, he's written a new single called "White Light" about the extended bout with pneumonia that left him hospitalized in Vienna for three weeks.
"You may recall my reference to those strange individuals who took the time to pray for my death as I lay in my hospital bed back in November," said Michael, describing his new comeback single. "Don't think I don't realize how many of you out there prayed for my recovery… I thank you all from the deepest part of my soul. And I will repay your unending kindness the only way I know how, with 'White Light'. It's for all of you, for everyone who prayed for me. And I promise you it's a blinder."
Decide for yourselves with the brand new lyrics video, unveiled earlier today to commemorate 30 years since Wham!'s first single "Wham! Rap" entered the British charts. Check it out below.
First thoughts?
Woof. The Viennese doctors may have saved George Michael from pneumonia, but they clearly haven't cured his inexplicably love of Auto-Tune or newfound fondness for drab, sterile dance-pop arrangements. Still, you have to give him credit for being… well, alive, and vibrant and earnest. It's hard to hate a song that's really about something, especially in the world of pop music, where insincerity is usually considered a virtue. George set out to write a thank you note to his friends and family, and viewed as such, "White Light" is (I suppose) a resounding success.
Verdict? Musically, it's a bit of a dud. But the fact that George Michael is still here with us releasing singles at all is certainly something to be thankful about.
