As promised, The Flaming Lips embarked on their potentially world record-breaking 24 hour tour Wednesday evening in Memphis, performing a total of eight concerts (complete with opening bands and special guests) and webcasting the whole shebang as part of MTV's O Music Awards. As much as I tend to discourage people from taking anything away from Jay-Z (the guy's got people, you know?), I'm very pleased to announce that with 20 minutes to spare, Wayne Coyne & Co. officially now hold the world record for most concerts in a single day. Congratulations, guys!
"We don’t really know what’s going to happen,” said Coyne ahead of the ambitious endeavor. “A tornado could come through or something and change the whole thing that we do. It’s all up for grabs, you know.” Even without destructive weather, the band's 24-hour jaunt was something to behold—the band performed a handful of rarely played favorites ("Be My Head," "It's Summertime," making its live debut) and even teamed up with Jackson Browne in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, opening with the latter's "These Days."
In case you're wondering (I know you are), yes, The Flaming Lips adhered to the Guinness Book of World Records people's very strict, specific guidelines, which meant no speeding (oh yeah, they traveled by bus… what now, Jay-Z??) and no drinking or drugs on the tour. There's a definite argument to be made that without the consumption of illicit substances, it couldn't possibly be considered a proper tour, but why steal The Flaming Lips' thunder, right? Just imagining how tired they must be is making me want to crawl back into bed. DON'T PUSH ME, I'LL DO IT.
