If you were looking for an excuse to avoid tipping those annoying costumed characters in Times Square and Central Park, the litany of offenses committed by Anti-Semitic Elmo should give you enough to last a lifetime. The New York Times did the Lord's work to discover the true identity of a man wearing an Elmo costume who was taken away from Central Park in an ambulance after spouting off a string of curse word-laden epithets against Jews.
But is this Elmo a bad guy or a psychologically troubled person? Both. The NYT reports that Elmo's legal name is Adam Sandler, he received a degree from the University of Oregon, he started a website called "Welcome to the Rape Camp" while traveling in Cambodia, he allegedly paid underage girls for sex, and he worked for the Girl Scouts of America as a temp.
In short, he's exactly the sort of guy you'd want your child approaching.
Sandler returned to Central Park, in spite of a police warning not to, which is when the NYT got the chance to talk to him. Who knows if anything he says is true, but Welcome to the Rape Camp DID inspire a "scholarly" paper on violence and Cambodian pornography, which is a clear sign to me thatI need to start working on my PhD.
All of this is just to say that you shouldn't talk to strangers in New York City, especially if they're wearing costumes.
