Interview: Trey Weatherholtz Talks 'Real World St. Thomas' Hookups and Tempers

Our favorite thing to do with The Real World—aside from and wishing we were sexy enough to be one of St. Thomas' seven smokeshow strangers—is incessantly poke the stars of the reality show for details on the dramatic season ahead. First up, Trey Weatherholtz, the hunky-chested Baltimore bro who might be the nicest guy to hit the reality house in years: he's charming and swoonworthy (ask Laura), and his most viciously bitchy enemy this season is a stupid f*cking pirate hat. Plus, we recapped last night's episode and guess what? He sorta liked it! Sorta! By Terron R. Moore

OLOGY: Since one of the themes on The Real World is relationships, let's talk about your hookups with that "stupid f*cking pirate hat".

TREY WEATHERHOLTZ: [Laughs] Basically, I purchased the pirate hat a little bit after we get our job and—I don’t know, man—it’s just something that stuck with me! It was like a $7 souvenir at a gift shop, and it was kind of a joke. But then I started wearing it around the house a lot, and I don’t think my roommates took me seriously when I was wearing it. It grew into a different persona.

So you eventually had to dump it.

Yeah, I did. But you’re going to have to tune in to see how.

Are you a big fan of The Real World?

You know what? I used to watch the older seasons in early middle school and late high school. So I'm more familiar with seasons like Austin, Brooklyn, and Denver… I wasn’t really familiar with the newer seasons like Back to New Orleans and Back to Vegas. So I’m familiar with some of the older seasons and some of the memorable characters… like Danny and Melinda.

In your opinion, who's the hottest girl in Real World history?

I can't think of every single girl on The Real World! But one person in particular stands out to me: Svetlana from Key West. She actually went to Temple in Philadelphia which is very close to me, and I have some friends up there that actually know her. Yeah, she's definitely one of the hotties that stand out.

This season, who did you get along with best in the house?

To be honest, I get along better with different roommates at different times. There were times were I didn’t get along with Brandon, and there were other times where Brandon was my best friend in the house. There were other times where Laura and I were having disagreements and she wasn’t my favorite person to go to, but I felt like she understood me the best, and we probably spent the most time together. But then again, Swift was my boy: we were the same height, we were the same athletic build, we played the same sports. But Swift would get on my nerves a lot! He can be a little annoying sometimes!

This season's casting is interesting for two reasons. The first is that no one was gay.

It’s incredible you mentioned that, because that's the very first thing we noticed about each other. We spent the majority of the season guessing which roommate was the gay one. We felt somebody was hiding something from us, because of past seasons! The entire time we were in St. Thomas, we were really skeptical of one another; we were joking around about which one was the gay one and which one would eventually come out.

Who'd you think was the gay one?

[Laughs] There were a couple of people that were questionable at times, but we probably gave Swift the hardest time because of his “metrosexual” nature. Swift has so much swagger, so we'd always give him a hard time. But he took all the jokes in stride. It was really funny.

The second big difference was that every single roommate was single. And you seemed to hit it off with Laura pretty quickly…

The fact that everyone was single left room open for everyone to basically be themselves without feeling like there would be repercussions for their actions. So when you see Laura and I hit it off in the first episode, I didn’t feel I was obligated to act a certain way. I definitely felt like there was something special about Laura, and I think we all tried to take advantage of that at different times.

So do any roommates hook up?

… You’ll definitely see connections! You’ll see Marie and Robb have a slight connection, and Laura and I obviously had our connection, but you’re really going to have to see the connection between Latoya and Swift. I’m not going to give away whether there were any relations or anything like that, but there were a lot of things we didn’t see in person, and a lot of rumors flying around. I feel like that one flies under the radar a little bit.

What was the St. Thomas nightlife like?

Man, when I first heard we were going to the Virgin Islands, I had this image in my mind of Palm trees and hot chicks and night clubs and stuff like that, but it wasn’t until we got to St. Thomas that we realized how small the island actually was. The nightlife is really not all that jumping; there were times where we found ourselves going to the same club maybe three nights in a row. It got to the point where we looked at each other like "what the hell are we doing here? We’re embarrassing ourselves, people are going to look at us like we’re a joke!"

As we start the season, you and Brandon clearly start at odds with Laura and then the notebook incident. What was that like?

You know, St. Thomas was an awesome growing experience for me, and my relationship with Brandon was a huge part in that. When we first walked into the house, I was the very confident and secure person, and Brandon came from a very unstable background and he was actually very unsure of himself and he was a jealous person. And that’s not to offend him: that’s just something Brandon has honestly said. Those are his words. In the beginning, Brandon and I didn’t realize how much we actually had in common with each other. People saw me as the All-American, the prom king, the varsity captain, and Brandon was all tattoos and gauged ears, and he talked a lot about how he was homeless. And I tried to make sure that Brandon eventually knew that I was actually evicted from apartment a couple months before I went out for The Real World. I wouldn’t necessarily say I was homeless, but I had that connection with Brandon in that I know what it feels like to get that notice; I know how it feels like to be faced with that situation. And the fact that Brandon was a previous addict, my father was a drug addict as well. So I grew up in a house that was actually covered in drugs sometimes. Brandon and I didn’t get close [initially] because we didn’t realize how many similarities we actually have with one another, but as the season went on and we started to open up with each other a little more, I think we started to see a little bit more of ourselves in each other, regardless of our physical appearance. It’ll be really cool to see how our relationship evolves over the course of the season.

MTV has described you as a guy with an aggressive temper, but you seem pretty collected in the first week. Do you show that temper over the season?

I don’t know if you’re going to see it, but yes, there were some arguing in the house; some things may or may not have gotten broken! You’ll have to see if they decide to show things like that. I did let my anger out at times, but I really did a great job managing it in some situations where it definitely could have gotten out of control.

Did you do anything you wouldn't want your parents to see?

Without trying to make this sound disgusting, I’ve brought girls back to the house since high school and my mom knows what it is! Since I’ve gotten older, my mom and I have actually become friends as opposed to a mother and son relationship, so she's really excited about the show. There are things I wouldn’t want her to particularly watch, but nothing that I'd ever take back.

So reading in between the lines there, are you bringing girls home in St. Thomas?

[Laughs] It's one of those things that you'll have to tune in to see! I did have a connection with Laura… but at the same time, I was single! So there’s that fine line between hurting someone’s feelings or disrespecting your other roommates, and being careless and just doing it for yourself. There’s definitely a possibility, but that’s not something I’m going to tell you yet!

The Real World St. Thomas airs Wednesdays at 10pm on MTV.
