The hopeless romantic in me refuses to believe it's a mere coincidence that on the same morning the Supreme Court decided to uphold proper health care coverage for a staggering majority of Americans, the Red Hot Chili Peppers debuted their gorgeously celebratory, beautifully life-affirming new music video for I'm With You highlight "Brendan's Death Song." What do these two evens have to do with one another? Absolutely nothing, but it's been one of those mornings. Just go with me on it.
Directed by Marc Klasfeld, the video finds the band in the middle of a proper New Orleans funeral, complete with period costumes, tons of extras and a sensibly muted color palette. Check it out below.
The "Brendan" in question is legendary Los Angeles promoter Brendan Mullen, who, in addition to giving the Chili Peppers their first big break opening for Bad Brains, was a vital figure in the L.A. punk scene that also spawned X, The Go-Go's, The Germs and others.
If there's one thing we definitely know about the Red Hot Chili Peppers, it's that they do their best work when paying tribute to their friends, and "Brendan's Death Song" is no exception. The song is gorgeous and the video is one of their all-time best; both understated and profound, lavish and personal. You can tell that a lot of love went into this, it positively seeps through every frame. Do you think they'd consider going into funeral bookings full-time? If so, find me a bus to walk in front of, because this is ten types of amazing.
