Gabriel commented on Giancarlo Stanton Monster Homerun Sunday Versus the Cubs:
“Amazing home run. Few players in baseball can hit that ball so hard and far. Can't wait for Stanton to earn freedom from the glorified AAA team Marlins and play for a real MLB club.”
Minor league baseball is the best. Example 23,435 came to us yesterday, when Raul Mondesi, Jr. (yes, son of that Raul Mondesi) of the Helena Brewers hit what appeared to be a game-tying home run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning.
I say "appeared" to tie the game, not because there was any doubt whether the ball cleared the fence, but because Mondesi Jr. forgot to touch home plate after he rounded the bases. What happened next was weird. It was confusing. It was chaotic. In the end, Mondesi was out after an RBI triple that cut the Missoula Osprey's lead to 2-1, and the game was over. Watch:
Looks pretty obvious that Mondesi's stride goes straight over home plate without ever touching it.
"Did he miss home plate? You tell me, because I don’t know, I didn’t see it," Helena manager Jeff Isom said after the game, after a long talk with the umpire.
"On any home run, the umpire has one job, and that’s to watch the plate and make sure the runners touch it. He said he (Mondesi) missed it by eight inches.
"It’s a terrible way to lose a ballgame, but the guys learned a good lesson. From now on, make sure you jump on the plate on a homer," he added.
Raul Mondesi Jr. signed with the Brewers in 2010, receiving an $800,000 bonus out of the Dominican Republic. After spending the past two seasons playing for the Brewers summer league team in the Dominican Republic, this is the first minor league season in the United States for the 19-year-old.
