Songwriters, in a sense, are always crafting little mini musical biopics about their own lives—documenting the highs and lows, triumphs and failures, hopes and disappointments. By "songwriters," of course, I'm referring to the mere mortal variety, a group of which our pal Rufus Wainwright has never ever been a member.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone to promote his ongoing Out Of The Game (check out our mixed review above) tour dates, Rufus dropped that he's currently working with Tony Award-winning director Enda Walsh on a new movie musical called The Great White Way, loosely based on Wainwright's life and featuring many of his classic songs.
"We're really early in that process," says Rufus. "It's loosely based on my life – very, very loose. Perhaps it's more of a kind of mythic Rufus that he's trying to create. It stems from some of my past glories and tragic endings, but it's by no means a biography of me or anything."
A prodigiously talented gay teen? Emotionally abusive father figure? Years of struggling in the New York coffee house scene? Lavish costume changes and pop royalty cameos? Plenty of drugs and maybe even the stray orgy or two? It's a guaranteed hit! Make sure "Poses" and "Baby" are in there somewhere and I'm in.
