Damon Albarn (Sort Of) Confirms Blur Will Record New Album In Hong Kong
Bands have formed, released albums and broken up in the time Blur has spent deliberating whether they will or won't record a follow-up to 2003's sans Graham Coxon swan song Think Tank. Has Damon Albarn finally made up his mind this time? Certainly sounds like it: at a concert in Hong Kong last night, Albarn reportedly announced the cancellation of an upcoming Japanese tour leg, adding: "So we have a week in Hong Kong, and we thought it would be a good time to try and record another record."

Now, I know, a week doesn't seem like much time to record a new album… especially one with such towering expectations… but ...
If you've been following Bluron Twitter these past few weeks, you've no doubt noticed a barrage of cryptic dates and Instagram non sequiturs— stray bits of new lyrics written out in colorful neon light. No, you're not going crazy, it didn't make any real sense to anyone else either… until now.
In a new video released by the band this morning, bassist and dedicated cheese-maker Alex James announces that on July 2, the band will properly debut their two previous hinted-at (on stage and otherwise) new songs "Under The Westway" and "The Puritan" (written exclusively for Blur's upcoming Olympic closing ceremonies concert in Hyde Park on August 12) on an undisclosed London rooftop as part of a special Twitter webcast. "Westway" will be performed at 6:15pm BST (1:15pm EST) followed by an interview with the band and then "The Puritan" at 7:15pm BST.
"This is something that happens incredibly rarely," James teases. "Who knows if it will happen again, whether this is the end or the beginning of the next chapter?"
In a weird way, it's a little shocking, don't you think? After months and months and months of back and forth, conflicting stories and "will they or won't they?" speculation, Blur have finally and officially announced plans to perform and release new music. (Both songs will be released via 7" single… and, presumably, digitally… on August 6.) You know what I'll be glued to next Monday afternoon. If you're lucky enough to be going to see the band this summer, in the name of all things holy and unholy alike, please make the racket of your lifetime and convince the boys to keep their Blur caps on!
