For us unlucky sods who weren't swift enough to grab a copy of The Flaming Lips And Heady Fwends on limited edition vinyl this Record Store Day, the band will be releasing the double-album collaboration compilation on CD and digitally this Tuesday, July 26. That's not the only exciting Flaming Lips news on the horizon, though—in addition to pissing off Erykah Badu and attempting to set a new world record, Wayne Coyne & Co. have also been putting the finishing touches on a brand new studio album, scheduled to drop sometime this fall.

"I honestly think it might be the best Flaming Lips record that we've ever made," Wayne recently told Rolling Stone, describing the band's upcoming thirteenth studio album, their first collaboration-free collection of new songs since 2009's Embryonic. "We did a session last week, and when we get a free couple weeks at the end of July we'll finish it up… "It really took us by surprise… We were kind of making it like we were sleepwalking."
I won't even attempt to predict what The Flaming Lips might have in store for us, though personally, I've always been partial to their lush, cleaner, Soft Bulletin-style albums. I love a good noisy freak-out as much as the next Flaming Lips fan, but it might be interesting to hear them marry the wild experimenting to cool electronics and pop melodies again… or, even better, take the band in a wild new direction we've never heard or expected from them before. You'll never know what you're going to get with these guys… that's kind of why they're so great, right?
