So, um, remember that hot minute on Wednesday when it looked like hey, maybe Sonic Youth aren't really gone forever because, look, Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore have maybe put aside enough of their differences to record YOKOKIMTHURSTON, a collaborative new album with Yoko Ono that'll hit stores and playlists on September 25? Remember that? I wouldn't get your hopes too far up, fellow Sonic Youth fanatics—surprise, surprise, it looks like Thurston's got another (maybe) full-time gig.

Our pals over at Pitchfork dropped word this morning that Thurston has started a brand new band called Chelsea Light Moving with frequent teammates Keith Wood (guitar), Samara Lubelski (bass), and John Moloney (drums). The gang are currently at work on their debut album (due out soon via Matador Records), but in the meantime, you can download a new song called "Burroughs" (I'll give you three guesses who it's named after) right here.
First thoughts?
It's a nice change of pace for Thurston—reminds me a lot of his criminally overlooked solo album Psychic Hearts. A little grittier, a little meaner than Sonic Youth have sounded since maybe Dirty or even Sister or EVOL. Love the weird, borderline atonal staccato chords and the shifting tempos and grooves. As much as I loved what he had going on with Demolished Thoughts, it's always a breath of fresh air to hear Thurston doing what he does best: chaotic and noisy electric guitar freak-outs.
