True story: I am completely banned from playing D'Angelo's "Untitled"… or, really, any of Voodoo… by my girlfriend unless we're… you know. And even then, I get in big trouble for putting it on. I don't know if it’s the song itself… that slithering, slow rhythm crawling beneath those sensual guitars and the man himself gasping and gently wailing in that breathlessly tender falsetto of his… or the video… (insert your own mental image here)… but in either case, the song's completely off limits.

So I don't know how I'm going to break the news to her that on Sunday, July 1, D'Angelo himself (not a hologram, mind you) will be performing his first televised concert appearance in a dozen years on this year's BET Awards, scheduled to air live that night. He'll be joining fellow performers Usher, Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown and 2 Chainz and a whole slew of nominees including (most notably) Kanye West, in the lead with a total of seven.
Is 2012 shaping up to become the year D'Angelo finally makes his long awaited comeback? It's sure starting to appear that way. In addition to the 30 or so new songs that collaborator and confidant Questlove promises he's been working on, there was that highly publicized super jam at Bonnaroo and stops at the Essence Music Festival and Jay-Z's Made In America yet to come. It's been a long time coming, but I have a feeling there will be a whole new slew of D'Angelo music I won't be allowed to play dropping in the very near future. Fingers crossed.
