On the offhand chance you aren't 70-years-old and weren't watching The Tonight Show last night, you'll be (maybe) pleased to know that our old pal Katy Perry stopped by Jay Leno's couch last night to chat about her upcoming 3D documentary Katy Perry: Part Of Me (in theaters July 5), her unusually complicated Christian upbringing, her early struggles in Hollywood and maybe even a little bit about ex-husband Russell Brand, who I can't help but notice she sort of emulates whenever she wraps up a long story about herself.
Check it all out (including a clip of her refreshingly frank grandmother) below.
Incubus CDs? Radiohead concerts? What happened, Katy?!
Clearly I'm not the intended audience for Katy or her new film, but I find it interesting that, in the interview, she proudly tells Jay that she's always had a strong, unfaltering creative vision from the very beginning… yet fails to mention or explain why she decided to trade confessional Christian pop/rock music for cutesy, sexed-up radio-ready pop music when her rightly forgotten first album went the way of the dinosaur. Maybe I'm just an idiot like that, but those two versions of Katy Hudson/Perry don't feel cut from the same "creative vision" cloth. Maybe it's addressed in the film. Oh god, maybe I will have to go see Katy Perry: Part Of Me next weekend. Don't tell anyone you saw me there.
