Gabriel commented on Giancarlo Stanton Monster Homerun Sunday Versus the Cubs:
“Amazing home run. Few players in baseball can hit that ball so hard and far. Can't wait for Stanton to earn freedom from the glorified AAA team Marlins and play for a real MLB club.”
This Joe Maddon / Davey Johnson old man spat is getting really good.
It began earlier this week, you'll recall, when Nationals managers Johnson transgressed baseball's unwritten rules by busting former Nationals (and current Rays) pitcher Joel Peralta for having pine tar in his glove. Maddon ripped into Johnson, calling it a "pussy move" after the game.
Now, the feud has digressed into a strange war of words fit for the Grumpy Old Men film series.
"I don't know him that well, but I thought he was a weird wuss anyways," Johnson said of Maddon before continuing on in an effort to highlight his own befuddlement over Maddon's active use of Twitter:
"I don’t want to get in a shouting match with Joe," Johnson told the media on Wednesday. "I looked him up on the internet and found out he has a Tweeter, so he can get to more people than me."
At the same time, Joe Maddon was still steamed from pine tar incident, and suggested that the Nationals organization had lost a lot of credibility around baseball thanks to Johnson:
"Just looking down the road, if I’m a major league player that may happen to want to come to play for the Nationals in the future, I might think twice about it, under the circumstances," Maddon said before Wednesday's game. "Because this is a guy(Peralta), this is one of their former children here that had really performed well and all of sudden he’s going to come back to this town and they’re going to rat on him based on some insider information."
Then, when informed of Davey Johnson's "Tweeter" comment, Maddon took it to full Grumpy Old Men territory:
"Most men have Tweeters," Maddon said with a laugh. "I would never use my Tweeter to an unfair advantage."
With the tragic loss of Walter Matthau, I thought we'd seen the end of the Grumpy Old Men series, but maybe Davey Johnson and Joe Maddon can give us one more hurrah.
Here's a good video mashup of the spat, followed by Grumpy Old Men.
