Things got real this week, you guys. The theme was vulnerability, which meant it was time for deep confessions and a lot of tears.
Homework Assignment: “My Life Would Suck Without You” by Kelly Clarkson
I was confused by this song choice. It’s a happy, upbeat song! And yet the contestants managed to make it sound depressing as possible. Apparently this bunch thinks that being vulnerable means looking into the distance and making sad pouty faces. Guest mentor Cory Monteith picked Nellie, who was definitely the standout, as the winner. Props to the show for having both Rachel and Finn on as guests already.
Music Video: “Everybody Hurts” by R.E.M.
The video centered on teen bullying, so music video director Erik White had a discussion with everyone about their own experiences with bullies. The conversation was emotional as they all revealed their own personal struggles, like how Shanna was called a crack baby and Lily used to be a real-life mean girl herself.
They each got the chance to play both bullies and victims during the shoot. Lily had trouble lip-syncing but she had no trouble throwing Aylin to the ground and yelling in her face while pretending to be a cheerleader. During Charlie’s scene with Mario, he took Mario’s cane away even though he wasn’t instructed to, which upset the judges on set. I understand how that was a wrong move and it could have been dangerous for Mario, but they still ending up using that take in the video. Don’t criticize him for a choice he made, then go with it anyway. Not cool. The video turned out a bit dramatic, but at least it wasn’t a train wreck like last week.
Last Chance Performances:
Lily – “Mercy” by Duffy
The judges gave Lily another sassy song for her second time in the bottom three, but she expressed to Ryan afterwards that she’s most comfortable singing ballads. She started to cry as she told Ryan that she hasn’t gotten a chance to show him that side of her yet. I get that people are annoyed by Lily’s attitude, but I still like her. And she looked amazing.
Charlie – “Fix You” by Coldplay
Well, that was unlike any version of “Fix You” that I’ve ever heard. But in a weird way, it worked. Ryan called it “maybe my favorite thing I’ve ever seen on this show.” Charlie is a cutie, ok?
Mario – “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz
Eh, it was the Hawaiian/ukulele version, and I wish he had gone the classic route. The judges brought up the pitch issues he had in the recording studio and his tendency to be defensive. Mario teared up as well because he didn’t want to come off that way.
Eliminated: No one!
I CALLED IT, BITCHES. Ryan was pleased with all the performances, and it had been a hard week, so it needed a happy ending. Also, with two people leaving last week, the show wouldn’t be behind an episode if they gave everyone a free pass.
SumOlogy: Good job, The Glee Project, you didn’t frustrate me this time!
