I’ve spent a good majority of the day resisting the temptation to click on the red-band trailer for Sundance horror spectacle V/H/S. This is mostly due to the fact that while perusing comments, I found that people cited many spoilers in this footage. Having seen it though, I can assure you that it’s difficult to retain any semblance of sanity while watching this, let alone pick it apart for potential plot reveals.
The film itself is a collection of short stories, kind of like a Ring-inspired, more horrifying and less miserable version of The Twilight Zone movie. It goes a little something like this. A group of criminals are enlisted to find a VHS tape in an old, decrepit house (because videotapes are a highly sought after commodity for robbers these days) in which they are subjected to a slew of disturbing videos. The main draw is that V/H/S features an all-star lineup of horror directors, each responsible for a tape that the criminals watch as they search for their desired video. It’s a very meta-concept that looks like it could pay off. Plus, Ti West (responsible for one of my most adored horror films of recent memory The House of the Devil) directed one of the segments. V/H/S hits video on demand on August 31, and arrives in select theatres on October 5.
