The rom-com scene has been a little raunchier ever since Judd Apatow started making his sweet but spicy megahits about sex, poop and, y'know, traditional family values. This film, smoothly-directed by documentary filmmaker Nanette Burnstein (American Teen) aims to fill our belly with laughs and our hearts with joy for the hip young couple.

Mostly it succeeds, due to Long and Barrymore's chemistry--the two are on-and-off in real life--and a great supporting cast of SNL's Jason Sudeikis and the always-welcome Christina Applegate, who's proven over and over (The Sweetest Thing, The Wedding Singer) that the sidekick is usually my favorite part of the movie.

The couple meets at a bar-slash-arcade (only in Brooklyn) and have a tipsy hookup that leads to real connection, as evidenced by a love montage set to '80s music. But there's a catch: Barrymore lives in San Francisco and is heading back to grad school. Five minutes before she gets on the plane, they decide to have a long distance relationship.

And for the next 90 minutes, time zones, flirty co-workers and lack of job opportunities on either coasts threaten to break them apart. It's relatively predictable, but the dialogue's above average and the actors appealing, especially with blue material (Applegate and Barrymore have a GREAT moment while discussing oral sex).

The subheaders ("Six months later," "Two months later," etc.) every five seconds got irritating, and it threatened to take itself too seriously when there's a fight in the rain, whatever. But for the most part, it was cute, and nice to see Drew Barrymore continue to come into her own after the equally-fun Whip It!
