It's sort of like a fake handbag. If some discerning eye picks out your Chinatown Chanel, you instantly go from classy to trashy. On the same token, if you're wearing fake fur--some on-trend thing you picked up at K-Mart or something--and someone touches it, you're busted.
Do you really want to spend over a grand on the real thing, considering you'll only wear it a few times in the winter and it's more practical to invest in those Hunter rain boots you've been meaning to snatch up?
I thought so... until I saw this picture of Gia Coppola.

Sure, she's a Coppola and can afford real fur. But can our shabby fakes even come close to approximating the perfect cream shade? How well it fits on her shoulders? Looking at Miss Gia makes us feel like cheap frauds.
