6 Unconventional Father's Day Gift Ideas For The Unconventional Dad

Lauren Caruso
Fashion < Style.

If there's anything I've learned about parents in my 24 years, is that dads aren't nearly as fussy as moms. In the weeks (months, even!) leading up to Mother's Day, I had received at least three dozen pitches for the best gift of all time, but I've opened a total of zero emails pertaining to Father's Day. That's kind of sucky amirite?

Anyway, even though it probably won't take more than a six-pack and a porterhouse to please dad this Sunday (That's right: Father's Day is June 17!), here are 5 out-of-the box gift ideas to show your dad you really care.

father's day gift ideas

1. Vintage FlaskWe all know dads looove whiskey, but instead of going the safe route and picking up some Johnny Walker, get him a vintage leather flask. Extra points for one with a story, so dad can retell it while showing off his new accessory.  As you might expect, the best place to get one on the cheap is Etsy

2. Computer Chair—He may have longed for a Dan Conner-approved lazy boy in the past, but calm is back pain by snagging him an ultra comfy computer chair for all that time he's spending browsing golf sites (hi, Dad!). Though I was sold on the height-adjustable arms, this Hayneedle option has a ton of comfort features for $410.

3. A Twist on MemorabiliaInstead of getting him tickets to a baseball game or some sort of standard  m
emorabilia, up the practical joke ante by getting him game-worn underwear or socks from his favorite player. As SportsOlogist Anthony Schneck says, it's a play on the traditional gift of socks/underwear/neck tie. "Those aren't just any socks, Dad. Those are DEREK JETER'S SWEATY SOCKS FROM GAME 5 OF THE 2000 SUBWAY WORLD SERIES! You're on your own to scour eBay though.

Usually, you pay for these things by pounds of meat/month (10 lbs/month for 6 months will run you around $500), but prices differ from farm-to-farm. Check out a list of participating farms here.

5. Timeless FootwearEven if he's not the sartorial type, get dad a great pair of boat shoes. Not only are they timeless, but dads hate shopping for shoes, so you're saving him an errand down the road. Remember - if he's in between sizes, be sure to size down. Good leather will always stretch a bit, especially in the summer.

6. Vintage PhotoDads aren't usually pegged as sentimental, but my pops loved that my sister and I would get a professional photo of ourselves taken every year. He'd never replace last year's photo, but he instead adds each one to his wallet. If you're looking to go the photograph route (and you have access to some vintage pics), finger through old albums for a photo of him with his father doing something (like playing baseball, riding bikes, just hanging out in the yard), and try to match up to a photo of you and your father doing the same thing. You bet your ass he'll get choked up!
