Just in case you were worried that MLS had risen to the status of a full-fledged, legitimate sports league with up-to-the-minute coverage, today proved you wrong. Over the course of the past few hours, surreal rash of tweets alerted us to the fact that something was happening, but nobody seemed to know what. Chivas USA traded Heath Pearce to the New York Red Bulls! But for whom? Could it be oft-maligned DP Rafa Marquez, who apparently skipped training and had his agent on the field? Rumors momentarily surfaced that Rafa was forcing a trade, but those disappeared in favor of a theory that Marquez had blocked a trade to Chivas. Soon Marquez had disappeared completely, and his name was replaced with SportsOlogy favorite Juan Agudelo.
So. After all that nonsense, here's the deal: Juan Agudelo was traded from NYRB to Chivas USA in exchange for Heath Pearce, allocation money, a portion of Agudelo's future transfer fee, and a portion of Heath Pearce's salary. Keep in mind that this is Heath Pearce we're talking about here.
In the bizarre anti-universe that is Major League Soccer, this is considered a great deal for the Red Bulls. They've traded youth for age, a talented striker for a shitty (albeit MLS-competent) defender. But they've also shored up a horrific defensive back line and gave themselves plenty of financial flexibility by getting rid of Agudelo, who hasn't played much this season and whose potential was being stifled.
Still... this is HEATH PEARCE we're talking about. I'm thinking Chivas got the better of New York on this one, and they appear to be well on their way out of the depths of the West thanks to another deal that netted Philadelphia Union captain Danny Califf. Rule Number 1 of MLS trades: NEVER trade for Heath Pearce under any circumstances.
