Detroit Tigers Played Like Victims In Dud Of A World Series

Taking nothing away from the San Fransisco Giants, who played like champs and beat the Detroit Tigers' brains in for four straight games, the Tigers played the World Series like a sad-sack group of victims. Their defeatist attitude was reminiscent of the same woe-is-me feeling that the Yankees had recently brought to Detroit. Looking back, it sure feels like the Detroit Tigers lost the World Series just a few innings into the first game in San Fransisco. In Game 1, the Tigers sent Justin Verlander to the mound to oppose Barry Zito in what pundits called one of the most lopsided pitching matchups in World Series memory. It was a battle between the best pitcher in baseball in the past few seasons, against probably the worst pitcher in baseball over that same span. What happened? Anger At Jose Valverde Turns To Pity From Detroit Tigers Fans

There probably aren't many people around Major League Baseball who feel sorry for Jose Valverde. The Tigers' former closer can't get anyone out and can't figure it out, but after dancing all over the pitcher's mound for the past ten years as he as he saved 277 games in his career, there's a lot of people who are now dancing upon his grave, nodding in satisfaction at what the baseball gods have wrought upon him. Tigers fans' frustrations with Valverde have been steadily rising all season, coming to a head when he blew a four-run ninth-inning lead against the Yankees in game 1 of the ALCS. But after giving up hits to four of the five hitters he faced in mop-up time against the Giants last night, a dumbfounded, dismayed and very very lonely Valverde could be seen in the Tigers dugout talking in obvious confusion with Tigers pitching coach Jeff Jones.
