Quite often, there's a significant lag between a magazine's first plus-size cover and its second, but as we've seen with Vogue Australia's 52-year reign, it's impossible to get a second groundbreaking cover if you haven't had your first.
As it goes, Vogue Australia finally featured plus-size model Robyn Lawley with a 10-page feature in the mag's September issue, though the cover went to straight-size brunette Katie Fogarty. This came just two months after a lingerie-clad Lawley posed in Vogue Italia alongside fellow plus-size models Candice Huffine and Tara Lynn, who was later dubbed "The Body" by French Elle. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like the name stuck. But Lawley's back, this time to set the record straight about her eating habits, thankyouverymuch.
“Since there is an assumption that a lot of models ‘starve themselves’ to stay thin, I always find it both funny and shocking when people ask me if I ‘overeat’ or am ‘fed better’ on photo shoots to help me stay a ‘larger size,’” she told WWD. “While I may be a total foodie and enjoy cooking, I simply eat when I’m hungry and finish just before I’m full — so basically I eat normally, whether [I am] on or off a set.”
There's no way people really ask her if she's "fed better" on photo shoots, right? And people don't actually think she'll gain weight (in all the right places) on the spot, right? Nobody can be that dumb, I don't think. Anyway, the 22-year-old model had some wise words to add.
“Designers are our last frontier in terms of conquering the fashion industry. There is still unfortunately a stigma that thin is in. But with more amazing plus-size models emerging or switching from straight sizes I hope that they will start to see that beauty has no size and that using models of a variety of sizes will not affect sales — if anything it will improve them.”
Now can we all agree to stop asking plus-size models how much they eat? Perfect.
