Paul McCartney scored major points earlier today by releasing an open letter of support for Pussy Riot, the Russian feminist punk collective currently standing trial for a February protest event at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. McCartney joins an exponentially growing list of high-profile supporters of the imprisoned band members that already includes the likes of Madonna, Sting, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Peaches, Björk and countless others. Formally charged with "hooliganism" (yeah, seriously), the three accused members of Pussy Riot may face upwards of three to seven years in prison if convicted.
Here's what McCartney had to say:
Dear Nadya, Katya & Masha,
I’m writing to show my support for you at this difficult time. I would like you to know that I very much hope the Russian authorities would support the principle of free speech for all their citizens and not feel that they have to punish you for your protest. Many people in the civilized world are allowed to voice their opinions and as long as they do not hurt anyone in doing so I believe this is the best way forward for all societies. I hope you can stay strong and believe that I and many others like me who believe in free speech will do everything in our power to support you and the idea of artistic freedom.
Wishing you the very best of luck,
Paul McCartney
Pretty awesome, right? A verdict is scheduled to be reached tomorrow—in the meantime, you can check out the band's inspiring closing argument below and learn more about what you can do to support Pussy Riot and free speech everywhere right here.
