Lets use this hypothetical situation - For the sake of argument, lets say the owner of Wal-Mart is an anti-semite who has come out against the rights of Jewish citizens to marry or practice their beliefs. Or how about the owner of CVS (a major pharmacy/shop here in the northeast) comes out in favor of revoking all equal rights gained by black people since the 50's (you can fill in 'African-American' in place of 'black' for your own reading pleasure, but I truly dont believe in that politically correct garbage. Are Jamaicans 'African-American' once they step on US soil? Please.) Are you going to support their business, and be able to look these people in the face on a daily basis, knowing your dollar is indirectly giving a vote of confidence to the views of this bigoted CEO?
You can go ahead and say "thats different", but the only thing truly different in my scenarios are the company names and the groups discriminated against. Gay marriage might be an unpopular subject which is shunned by many, but at one point in time so was womens suffrage, equal rights for all US citizens, slavery, the thought of ever electing a Catholic president (say hey, JFK) and so on. If the CEO of your local major supermarket came out against a womans right to vote, would you ask your wife to shop there, or be able to justify buying groceries there yourself? If so, I hope you have a good divorce lawyer.
Beyond the fact that gay marriage being 'illegal' given marriages current functions and purpose is COMPLETELY unconstitutional, I say this with full conviction - If we all dont have equal rights, then we are all as susceptible to having our rights taken away and violated under the guise of the 'law'.
